UK dating app Fluttr aims to beat the 'Tinder swindlers' with biometric ID
A new British dating app is promising to eradicate Tinder Swindler-style romance fraud, which cost duped daters almost ยฃ100m last year, by ensuring that all members complete biometric ID verification before they digitally mingle. Fluttr, which claims to be the first UK online dating app to use such technology to improve user safety, is launching on Valentine's Day in the hope of getting a boost from singletons looking to change their relationship status. The issue of romance fraud, catfishing and fake profiles has been put into the spotlight following the release of Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler, which tells the true story of a man who went to extraordinary lengths to scam women for millions after meeting them online. The pandemic, when online dating was the only mixing that was allowed, has driven a huge surge in scams costing those duped ยฃ92m in the UK last year. "We want to rid the world of Tinder Swindlers and create a safe space free from the fake profiles used to defraud, catfish and abuse online daters," said Rhonda Alexander, the chief executive and co-founder of Fluttr.
Stripe goes beyond payments with Stripe Identity to provide AI-based ID verification for transactions and much more โ TechCrunch
Today, Stripe is stepping in to fill that need itself: The company is launching a new product called Stripe Identity -- a self-serve tool that companies can use to verify user identities, with Stripe managing the customer data in an encrypted format, using computer vision and machine learning to "read" and match up government IDs with live selfies. Stripe says the service works in as little as 15 seconds. The service is launching in beta starting today in 30 countries, the company said, but in the meantime, it's already quietly been in use by select partners. They include Discord (as part of its ID verification feature); Peerspace (which runs ID verification when onboarding users and merchants); Shippo (when when it identifies high-risk users and asks them to verify themselves); and other unnamed customers using it to prevent account takeovers. Developers can go here to request access, and it sounds like Stripe will be talking more about the service in general during Stripe Sessions, its developer conference, later this week.

AI Weekly: In China, you can no longer buy a smartphone without a face scan
Picture a world in which the baseline requirement for a new smartphone is a facial recognition test. You needn't imagine it -- in China, beginning December 1, that's the scrutiny to which the country's over 850 million internet users will be subject, without exception. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a late September statement that the rule, which will also prevent people from exchanging their mobile numbers, was necessitated by an uptick in phone and internet fraud. Furthermore, the ministry pledged that it would help to "increase supervision and inspection" and "strengthen assessment accountability" while "supervis[ing] the implementation of work" and the "real-name registration management of telephone users." A rule imposed by the German interior ministry in 2016 requires that domestic telecoms ask customers for ID cards, foreign passports, or temporary ID papers when they buy a SIM card or a cell phone.
Facial Recognition Use Cases in Banking & Financial Industry - How are the Chinese Leading in AI Tech Adoption?
When speaking about AI (artificial intelligence) and deep learning technologies, the Chinese are not just innovating at rocket speed, but the businesses are rapidly adopting these technologies in real-life business use cases to optimise customer experience and expanding market reach. Let's have a look at how the Chinese banking and financial industries are using facial recognition in business operations governed by stringent security requirements. As the customer repeatedly progresses his banking and financing needs with a bank or financial institutions, why can't the customer apply for a new product or service, from the comfort of his/her couch at home/office? Alipay (an asset of Alibaba's Ant Financial and world's largest mobile payment platform since 2014 Q2), China Merchants Bank (as of 2015, it ranks third of all Chinese companies for net cash), China CITIC Bank (China's seventh-largest lender in terms of total assets), Bank of Jiangsu and Ping An Bank are using facial recognition API to accomplish remote ID verification, either through the convenience of a mobile app, or a self-service kiosk/ATM/VTM.
